Hi parents! As some of you may know, third grade will be hosting a Third Grade Flea Market in May. This will be to help boosts our student’s skills in many areas, but specifically personal financial literacy and money. The idea is that sutdents will spend the week after STAAR crafting different items for the Flea market, and then 1st and second grade will use their math skills to come and “buy” some of their items using paper money. The reason I am telling you this now, is that we are hoping that some “craft” items will be donated to the grade level. Please know that if you are sending things, that they will be donated to the grade level, and not to individual classrooms or students. Below I have put a list of Items that we are in need of. Thank you so much for your support!

Paperclips
Yarn
Paper (Construction, cardstock, lined, printer)
Paint ( Tempra, watercolor)
Flour
Salt
Straws
Tissue
Duct Tape
Cardboard
Pipe Cleaners
Brown Bags
Fabric
Popsicle Sticks
Foil
Coffee Filters

Hello Parents and Followers,

Previously we informed you about our Friendship Parties day, which is coming up next Friday, February 16, and would like to give some quick reminders about the class parties!  If you would like to sign up to volunteer for your child's teacher please let your teacher know ahead of time before that Friday. We always greatly appreciate your support. For your child, please bring a white lunch bag/sack to serve as a mailbox. If you want your child to bring valentines cards, there is no need to write names on them, but please have enough to pass out for everyone in class. There will be more information to come, as the date gets closer.

Language Arts
This week in Language Arts, we studied Theme and Cultural Heritage in Fables, Myths, Folktales, and Legends. Students paraphrase the theme and supporting details of each one of the elements previously mentioned.

Science
This week we started with Life Science, in which began to understand and communicate the importance of organisms and environments.  They learned that organisms have characteristics that help them survive and can describe patterns, cycles, systems, and relationships within the environments.  We also covered natural disasters and ecosystems.

Math
In Math this week we continue focusing on Fractions! Students will be able to reason about fractions using multiple models. They will also understand that a fraction describes the division of a whole object or a set of objects into equal parts. They get to explore the different models of fractions including strip diagrams and fractions on a number line.

This week in Math we are focusing on a new unit in Fractions! Students will be able to reason about fractions using multiple models. They get to explore the different models of fractions including strip diagrams and fractions on a number line.

We are wrapping up our Space unit in Science by exhibiting and demonstrating the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Here is an example of what the students were able to exhibit and demonstrate:

Our students were also able to create an Interactive Word Wall on the Solar System. They were able to split into groups and do research on each planet. There was conversation about how big each planet had to be and made sure they were placed in the correct order from closest to furthest from the Sun. Here is an example of the Interactive Word Wall:

We hope you have a terrific week!

Parents and Followers,

Just a quick update and reminder that 3rd grade will not have a middle of the year parent teacher conference day. If you would like to meet with your child's teacher please contact them directly and set up a separate time for any additional questions or concerns.

Each month the HealthyZone organization sends out a newsletter that always has some great tips and interesting articles. In this month's edition, there is an article regarding the digital age of kids. These are some great tips for parents!
